Dr Wilhelm Windish

Technische Universität München (GE)

Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Windisch investigates livestock nutrition in context with agricultural sciences. He focuses on the physiological principles and tolerances of nutrient transformation in the metabolism of livestock, mainly in the fields of trace minerals. Further research areas refer to functional dietary compounds and circularity of livestock production.

After studying agricultural science at TUM, Prof. Windisch did his doctorate in 1988 and his lecturer qualification in 1995. Prior to his appointment as full professor at TUM, he was professor of animal nutrition at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU) (2002-2010). Prof. Windisch is a member of the Society for Nutrition Physiology (GfE) and other scientific societies.

In 2022, Prof. Windisch ended his active service at TUM in the context of partial retirement.

Dr Marta LOPEZ ALONSO

Universidad de Santiago de Compostela (SPAIN)

Marta López Alonso, DVM, PhD, is currently a professor at the Department of Animal Pathology at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). She is a specialist in mineral metabolism and coordinates the Animal Medicine research group (IMedA). She has participated and led numerous national and international projects related to mineral metabolism and the accumulation of toxic elements in animals from One Health Perspective. During the last decade she has also been involved in several projects related to sustainable agriculture, and particularly in organic farming.

Currently, he coordinates a crowdfunding project Minerais contra o cancro (Minerals fighting cancer) and leads the TIRAC operational group. From 2006 she also actively collaborates with EFSA as member of several working groups and currently is member of the EFSA FEEDAP Panel.

Dr Matthieu BRAVIN

CIRAD (FRANCE)

Dr Matthieu BRAVIN is an agronomist and a soil biogeochemist at CIRAD, the French agricultural research and cooperation organization working for the sustainable development of tropical and Mediterranean regions. He is a graduate of the national school of agricultural engineering (Enita, Clermont-Ferrand, France), of the national master of soil science and of a PhD in soil biogeochemistry (Montpellier, France).

Dr Matthieu Bravin studies the bioavailability of mineral elements in the agroecosystems of both northern and southern contexts. Among agricultural practices, he is more particularly interested by the substitution of imported mineral fertilizers by local organic residues (including animal effluents). Through both laboratory mechanistically-oriented and field-scaled approaches, his work focuses on the management of phosphorus fertilization and the assessment of the sanitary and ecotoxicological risks of trace minerals (e.g. copper and zinc) in contaminated agricultural soils.

Dr Bill WEISS

Ohic State University (USA)

Dr. Bill Weiss is a Professor emeritus of dairy cattle nutrition at The Ohio State University. During his 35-year career at Ohio State University he conducted research in the areas of effects of minerals and vitamins on cow health, forage and feed evaluation, and methods to incorporate variability into ration formulation for dairy cattle and has published more than 150 journal articles. He also had an extension appointment conducting numerous short courses on dairy cattle nutrition and wrote more than 450 proceedings and extension articles.

He has won several American Dairy Science Association awards and was named a Fellow of ADSA in 2015. He served on the 2001 Dairy NRC committee and as co-chair on the 2021 NASEM (formerly NRC) Dairy Committee. Dr. Weiss earned his B.S. and M.S. at Purdue University and his Ph.D. at The Ohio State University.

Dr Andrea CLARKSON

Nottingham University (UK)

Dr Andrea Clarksonqualified as an animal scientist in 2005 and later completed her PhD in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Nottingham, which focussed on copper metabolism in ruminants. She has been lecturing in Animal and Veterinary Sciences since 2007 and continues to research, focussing on trace mineral nutrition and specialising in one of the most problematic elements in livestock nutrition, copper.

Currently working at the University of Nottingham, she is passionate about education and sharing the knowledge discovered through research to improve animal welfare on a practical basis. She has taught at all levels over the last 15 years, and continues to teach and research, as well as providing professional development programmes and consultancy services to farmers and veterinary professionals. Her research has taken her on unexpected paths, such as undertaking several experiments at the UKs synchrotron radiation facility. Throughout her career she has been awarded several ‘Gold’ awards for her presentation and teaching skills; and hosted the popular ‘Mineral Masterclass’ to over 200 participants during lockdown.

Dr Alejandro RODRIGUEZ NAVARRO

Universidad de Granada (SPAIN)

Dr Alejandro Rodriguez Navarro is a PhD in Physics, and a Full Professor of Crystallography and Mineralogy, in Departamento de Mineralogia y Petrologia, at the Universidad de Granada, in Spain.

Here are his previous positions:

Postdoctoral Research Associate (Penn State University, The University of Georgia, USA) 1998-2002.

Posdoctoral Fellow, Universidad de Granada, 2003-2007

Associate Professor, Universidad de Granada, 2008- 2019

Research outline:

His research interests are biomineralization or how organisms control mineralization processes to form calcified tissues (bones, mollusk shells and eggshells). In particular, Dr Alejandro Rodriguez Navarro studies how different genetic, nutritional and environmental factors (water chemistry, pollution, climate change) affect the mineralization of calcified tissues, mainly in birds and mollusks.

He has published over 150 scientific publications. He participated to the Fulbright Scholar program.
